Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) Macabre month of horror #14

Sweeney Todd is a horror movie, but it is also a musical. Now that sounds weird, but it really isn’t. There are actually a lot of horror musicals.

Sweeney Todd is done by Tim Burton who also did ‘Nightmare before Christmas’ which is animated yes, but is also a musical with heavy horror elements.

Now I’m not a big fan of musicals, but when one is done really well, you can’t help but appreciate it. Of course kids movies almost always have musical moments, but this movie is a full on musical. It’s almost operatic in the way the story is told.

The movie stars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, who have appeared together in many other Tim Burton films. It also features Alan Rickman as the villain, who is always great. especially as a villain, and Sacha Baron Cohen, who I really hate, but his part is small and he get’s horrifically murdered, so it’s all good.

I won’t comment about the singing itself, as I feel I have no right to judge that, but I will say that none of the songs feel forced. Each song furthers the story and has a purpose. There are no songs that were put in, just for the sake of having a bigger soundtrack.

There is a good amount of comedy injected into the movie. The film can get really dark, and even sad at points. It is a really deep movie, the story is well contained and wraps up nicely although a bit bitterly.

The performances are great. Johnny Depp can be a great actor and he shows that here. The character of Sweeney Todd is very interesting, and while his motives may seem unoriginal at first, the execution makes it feel like a new take on an old formula.

There is an odd contrast between the special effects. There is a fair amount of blood in the movie. Sometimes it looks really good, and other times it looks really bad. It’s very obvious when it switches to CG and the CG looks really bad.

I won’t say too much about the movie. Sweeney Todd is a very good movie. It is so well made, and is more original than most crap coming out recently.
